Situation 41

You are in the late position with:

Before the poker flop you raised to $75. Loose Levin called on the button and the big blind also called your raise. There is $235 in the pot.

The flop comes

You have flopped top two pair. Now the big blind checks to you.

What will be your play?
Conclusion

You have top two pair but on this flop there also is a possible flush draw and a gut-shot straight draw. If Levin or the big blind has caught any part of the flop, he will call if you bet. If you go to the turn with this hand, it is possible that the fourth street card will give one of your rivals a flush or a flush draw if he has only one spade in his hand.

There is a possibility that any one of them could have a gut-shot straight draw on the flop.

Recommendation

You should bet $200. To win at the flop is the correct poker strategy for you.

Situation 42

You are sitting two seats to the left of the big blind with:

Before the flop you are the first poker player to come in you raised to $100. You get called by Reckless Ricky. He is having only $400 left after calling your $100 raise.

The flop comes

There is $235 in the pot. With just two of you, you flop top pair / top kicker.

What will be your play?
Conclusion

You are first to act and Reckless Ricky must act after you. You know you are going to play this hand out, so just ask yourself: How will extract more money into the pot on the flop? What would Ricky do if I checked? What would he do if I bet into him?

Recommendation

Check to Ricky - he will move in because his style of playing is rapid.

Situation 43

Solid Sammy is sitting to the left of the big blind and limps in for $25. You are next to act having

The flop comes

You raise to $125 with your pocket pair, Action Arnold calls on the button and the limper Solid Sammy also calls the raise. With three of you in the $410 pot the flop comes with an ace. You have flopped trip aces. Solid Sammy checks to you.

What will be your play?
Conclusion

You have top trips a very strong hand but not as strong as it would be if the flush draw and gut-shot straight draw were not on the board. Anyone with even one diamond in his hand could make a backdoor flush and beat you.

Recommendation

You don't want someone who has only one diamond in his hand to backdoor a flush. You cannot allow them to draw for free thus you are getting to bet at least $300. You want to make them pay something to try to draw out on your hand. If you get raised, you will have to put the remaining chips in the pot.
